The London Heathrow airport is the biggest amongst the five London airports. The other four are London Gatwick Airport, London City Airport, London Luton Airport and the Stansted Airport. Amongst these London airports, the Heathrow airport is the biggest and the busiest airport of all. London Heathrow airport or Heathrow, as commonly known to all, is located in the London Borough of Hillingdon. Heathrow is owned and operated by British Airport Authority, Heathrow originally was designed to have six runways in three pairs spaced approximately 120 degrees apart but now has just two parallel main runways running east-west and five terminals. The site covers 12.14 square kilometers (4.69 sq mi). Easy access to Heathrow via train and bus from other parts of London makes it one of the busiest airports London.
London City airport is a single-runway for Short Take Off and Landing, an airport for use by Short Take Off and Landing airliners, and principally serving the financial district of London. It is located on a former Docklands site, east of the City of London, opposite the Regatta Centre of London in the London Borough of Newham in East London, England. Mowlem engineering company is behind its construction in 1986/87. Gatwick is another important airport of London. Gatwick airport is the second largest London airports and second busiest in the United Kingdom after Heathrow. In 2008, it was the world’s 28th busiest airport in terms of passengers and ninth busiest in terms of international passengers. It is the world’s busiest single-runway international airport. Charter airlines generally do not operate from Heathrow and use Gatwick as a base for London and the South East.
London Luton airport, previously called Luton International airport is an international airport located east of the town centre in the Borough of Luton in Bedfordshire, England. It is the fourth largest airport serving the London area after Heathrow, Gatwick, and Stansted, is one of London’s five international airports along with London City Airport. In 2008, total passengers at London Luton increased by 2.6% to 10,180,734, the first time over 10 million passengers traveled in a single year, making it the fifth busiest airport in the United Kingdom. Most of the routes served are within Europe, although there are some charter airline routes to intercontinental destinations. The last among the London airports is the Stansted airport. It is a passenger airport located at Stansted Mountfitchet in the District of Uttlesford in Essex, northeast of central London. Stansted is a hub for a number of major European low-cost carriers.
